Gordon Rich-Phillips has today announced that the Greater Dandenong has received $14,000 funding towards the provision of Heritage Advisory Services for 2011-12. The funding will provide for the appointment of an experienced professional with the job of promoting heritage conservation, providing free advice to owners of heritage places, and assisting the City of Greater Dandenong with the management of heritage assets. “The role of heritage advisors in Dandenong will be to assist council and residents to make good decisions on the development and restoration plans for heritages sites”, Mr Rich-Phillips said. “With dozens of heritage sites in the municipality it is vital that we get the management our historical landmarks right so their presence may preserved in best way now and for future generations.” Programs provided by the Heritage Advisory Service have been successful in developing a positive attitude towards heritage across Victoria by helping people to recognise the importance of early buildings and enhance an understanding of the past. In shared commitment to this heritage initiative the City of Greater Dandenong has undertaken to supplement funding provided with a minimum $1 for $1 expenditure. “The $14,000 funding Greater Dandenong has received is the highest amount available, and reflects a demonstrated local commitment to preserving heritage," Rich-Phillips said. There are currently 36 sites in Greater Dandenong listed on the Victorian Heritage Database. Media contact: Janet Cummings/Courtney Mann 9794 7667
