Andrews’ Chisholm Road Prison – one day in and already 12 months behind

The announcement today by the Andrews Labor Government that construction has commenced on the Chisholm Road Prison exposes a 12 month delay in this project before works have even begun.

A since amended Corrections Victoria website page stated that construction of the Chisholm Road Prison “is set to commence in early 2019 with completion scheduled for 2022”.

It is now mid-February 2020 and works have only just commenced, throwing Labor’s stated completion date of 2022 into doubt and exposing Victorian taxpayers to yet another delayed major project.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Corrections, David Southwick:

“The Chisholm Road Prison is the latest in a long line of botched projects under the Andrews Labor Government.

“Victoria’s prison system is bursting at the seams and this delay risks the performance of our correctional system and threatens community safety.”
