Andrews embarrassed by Upper House barley decision

Labor has been embarrassed by the successful carriage of a Liberal Nationals motion supporting Victorian Barley growers in the face of Chinese Government tariffs.

Until now Daniel Andrews has been silent on this issue, but in the upper house, Labor MPs failed to back Andrews’s hard-line support for the Chinese Communist Party and the Belt and Road deal.

Andrews still refuses to release key details through FOI of advice received by DFAT and others before signing the dodgy deal.

The Belt and Road deal appears to have been unable to prevent the 80 per cent tariff on Victorian barley imposed by the Chinese Communist Party.

Comments attributable to the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, David Davis:

“This sends a message to barley growers that the Liberal Nationals are prepared to lead and provide support through the parliament.

“It sends a clear message to Daniel Andrews that he needs to get tougher and stand up for our barley growers.

“It also sends a message to the Chinese Communist Party that the Upper House opposes its barley tariff and demands its removal.

“If elected, the Liberal Nationals will tear up Labor’s Belt and Road agreements which to date have given Chinese government-owned construction groups a walk-up start on Victorian projects but has provided nothing in return for Victorian businesses, jobs and indeed barley farmers.”
