Andrews must investigate week of corrections chaos

Reports of multiple concerning security incidents within Port Phillip Prison this week has again highlighted the ongoing chaos in corrections under the Andrews Labor Government.

This week has seen multiple reports of serious security incidents within Victoria’s largest maximum security prison, including:

  • A major security breach resulting in 3 inmates scaling the prison roof brandishing metal bars.

  • A corrections officer being stabbed 11 times in a brutal ambush attack as part of a prison gang initiation.

  • Reports of terror inmates attempting to radicalise up to a dozen other serious offenders.

These concerning security incidents follow recent Corrections Victoria data confirming Port Phillip Prison has the most positive drug tests and largest quantity of drug seizures from prisoners of any correctional facility in the state.

Under Labor, Port Phillip Prison is in chaos and Daniel Andrews must immediately order a full investigation into these incidents and the management of this facility.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Corrections, David Southwick:

“It’s clear Victoria’s largest maximum security prison is in chaos under the Andrews Labor Government.

“It’s little wonder why Victoria has the worst reoffending rate of any state in the nation when violence and drugs in our correctional system are commonplace.

“Daniel Andrews must now act and call for a full investigation into these incidents and the management of Port Phillip Prison.”
