Daniel Andrews must act now on Victoria's youth justice mess

Two reports of assaults on staff at Malmsbury overnight are the latest in a litany of failures by Daniel Andrews in Victoria's youth justice system.

In the first reported incident, an inmate with a history of violence allegedly assaulted a male staff member by stomping on his head before stealing his swipe card and keys. The inmate is reported to have then accessed a restricted area before being brought under control. The male officer is in hospital in a stable condition.

In the second reported incident, a female officer was assaulted by a large group of inmates in a failed attempt to steal her keys. The female officer is recovering at home.

A recent FOI revealed the enormous concerns staff in the youth justice hold for their safety at work and the incidents overnight are yet another example of Daniel Andrews' failure to keep youth justice workers safe.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Youth Justice, Brad Battin:

"Andrews must stop ignoring the massive problems in Victoria's youth justice system.

"The safety of staff in Victoria's youth justice system will continue to be placed at risk if Labor continues to put its head in the sand and hope these problems will simply disappear.

"What will it take for Andrews to finally admit there is a problem Victoria's youth justice system and take immediate action to fix this mess?"
