Taking the train to Geelong today, Victorian Liberal Leader Michael O’Brien welcomed the Morrison Government’s $2 billion commitment to deliver a 32 minute fast rail service between Geelong and Melbourne.
This congesting busting investment by the Federal Government will almost halve the travel time between Geelong and Southern Cross Station.
Investment into Geelong rail will also help ease the congestion on the Princes Freeway and the West Gate Bridge which have both struggled to keep up with the unmanaged population growth Victoria has experienced over the past 4 years under the Andrews Labor Government.
Comments attributable to Leader of the Liberal Party, Michael O’Brien:
“Both the Federal Government and the local councils are on board with this critical investment into fast rail for Geelong. It’s only Daniel Andrews and Labor who are dragging the chain on making this commitment become a reality.
“If Geelong commuters spend an hour less on the train each day, that’s an extra hour that they will have to spend with their friends and family.
“Daniel Andrews doesn’t have a plan for managing Victoria’s population growth. Scott Morrison and local MP Sarah Henderson have delivered this commitment to help address population growth. Daniel Andrews just needs to sign up and pull his weight.
“This $2 billion investment by the Federal Liberal Government, if matched by State Labor, will deliver Australia’s first truly high-speed rail service, easing congestion on the currently unreliable Geelong train line.
“Daniel Andrews must get on board with this vital investment into high-speed rail for Geelong.”
