The Andrews Labor Government shouldn’t be surprised that the summer season has warm weather, and Victorians rightly expect that the public transport system should be able to operate in typical summer conditions.
It’s not good enough to just cancel the trams as a solution.
This isn’t extreme weather, this is typical summer weather and yet it’s throwing our tram network into chaos.
The Andrews Labor Government has advised that Route 30 has been shut down; Route 78 there will be buses replacing trams between North Richmond and Balaclava; Route 82 buses replace trams between Moonee Ponds and Footscray; Route 12 trams divert via La Trobe Street between St Vincent’s Plaza and Batman Park. Passengers will have to switch to Route 11 or Route 109 at St Vincent’s Plaza for Collins St.
Labor has been in government for 16 of the last 20 years. Labor has no excuses for the tram network not being able to cope with typical summer weather.
This isn’t a one off situation either. Tram service punctuality has declined under Daniel Andrews from 83% in 2014-15 to 81.7% in 2017-18, with Yarra Trams failing to meet benchmark punctuality in 2017-18.
In the most recent data, January 2019, 8,633 tram services were either short or cancelled – 6% of services.
Victorians deserve better than cancellations and delays.
Victorians will be scratching their heads wondering why so many tram services are being cancelled because of typical summer weather.
