Labor continues to keep Victoria Police babysitting empty quarantine hotels

Today during Question Time, Acting Police Minister Danny Pearson failed to identify the number and cost of Victoria Police officers currently deployed in hotel quarantine facilities.

Despite international flights having been suspended for over a month, up to 800 Victoria Police officers have been working within Labor’s quarantine program – resulting in fewer police and PSO resources available within the community.

This follows recent confirmation that 24 police stations across the state have been closed to the public throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as independent Crime Statistics Agency data confirms increases in offending in each of the March, June and September 2020 quarters.

With Labor preferring to keep police tied-up in empty hotels rather than in the community preventing crime, it’s clear Daniel Andrews has dropped the ball on community safety.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police and Community Safety, David Southwick:

“Using frontline police to babysit empty hotels is a complete waste of police time and taxpayers’ money.

“Daniel Andrews has left police to pick up the pieces of his botched COVID-19 response, forced stations to close their doors and left communities fending for themselves.

“Labor must return these police and PSOs back to the community so they can get on top of worsening crime and keep our community safe.”
