Labor must support Liberal Nationals “Move-on Laws” push

Yesterday, the Victorian Liberal Nationals second read the Summary Offences Amendment (Move-on Laws) Bill 2019 Private Members’ Bill, which willrestore and strengthen the Move-on laws repealed by Daniel Andrews in 2015.

Under Daniel Andrews, Victoria has become the protest capital of Australia with disruptive and dangerous protests bringing Melbourne to a halt, creating risks to the community and impinging upon the rights of law abiding Victorians going about their daily business.

Worse, these protests have been a major drain on Victoria Police costing millions in extra police time, diverting scarce police resources from protecting local communities.

It was reported that at a CBD protest last year, of the more than 70 protesters arrested, many returned to the protest and were subsequently re-arrested.

It is unacceptable that troublemakers can be arrested in the morning, released a short time later and immediately returned to the protest and cause further disruption.

In another case, 39 protesters who brought Melbourne to a halt got away with just a $100 fine despite the significant disruption caused.

Daniel Andrews has ignored repeated calls for the return of stronger powers for Victoria Police to deal with protestors aiming to shutdown our CBD at the expense of hardworking Victorians wanting to go about their daily lives.

Comments attributable to Shadow Attorney-General Edward O’Donohue:

“All Victorians have the right to participate in a lawful, peaceful protest, but not to shut down the city and stop commuters, visitors and businesses from going about their daily lives.

“The restoration of the Move-on laws willgive police the powers they need to get on top of this disruptive and dangerous behaviour that is having such a detrimental effect on our city.”

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police and Community Safety, David Southwick:

“Everyone has the right to protest but no one has the right to hold the city to ransom.

“Labor’s slap on the wrist punishments are a green light to those who want to disrupt the daily lives of others and place the community’s safety at risk.”
