Labor refuses to guarantee safety on Victoria’s rail network

In an extraordinary Public Accounts and Estimates Committee hearing, Labor’s embattled Minister for Public Transport, Melissa Horne, has refused to guarantee that the rail tracks on Victoria’s public transport system are safe and compliant with Victorian standards.

Minister Horne was asked three times to give the guarantee but with the budget revealing Labor has slashed safety inspections over the past year and into next year, she repeatedly refused to say that Victoria’s rail tracks are safe.

Victorians have a right to know whether or not they are travelling on a safe rail network.

Minister Horne’s repeated refusals to guarantee train travellers safety poses the question, what does she know that Victorians don’t?

If Minister Horne knows of safety concerns on our rail network she must lift Labor’s veil of secrecy and immediately come clean with the Victorian community.
