The Andrews Labor Government’s neglect toward Melbourne’s outer suburbs was made clear in Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) hearings yesterday.
Minister for Suburban Development, Shaun Leane, displayed his complete lack of interest when asked about grants from the Growing Suburbs Fund, stating that he was “still working through it.”
The Minister could not even give a guarantee that projects currently underway would be completed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Furthermore, no reasonable explanation was given as to why grants already provided were overwhelmingly distributed in Labor-held seats.
Shadow Minister for Suburban Recovery, Ryan Smith, said Daniel Andrews was unfairly prioritising Labor held seats in Melbourne’s outer-suburbs.
“No new suburbs have been identified to receive support and it is clear this won’t change any time soon,” Mr Smith said.
“Melburnians’ sense of community grew during two years of lockdowns and restrictions, and our growing suburbs can’t recover and rebuild without investment in important local projects.
“Rather than a proportionate spread across the suburbs, Labor is instead using the public purse to shore up local support.”
