The Andrews Government has announced that the commuter car parks at Mentone Station and Cheltenham Station may be closed until as late as mid-2021 as a result of level crossing removal works.
As a result, commuters are set to lose access to more than 620 all day car parks.
To address this significant loss of parking, Labor has announced ‘temporary parking spaces’ at Southland and Parkdale Stations during the two year closure.
However, these temporary cark parks are extremely inadequate, and provide only limited access to parking that will account to less than half of the 620 spaces being closed.
A majority of the temporary commuter parking to be provided near Southland Station will be free only to those parked in it prior to 8am on weekdays. Any commuters arriving in that car park after 8am will subject to standard Westfield Southland ticketless parking fees of up to $35 per day.
Even worse, the claimed additional car parking spaces announced at nearby Parkdale Station are already in daily use by commuters using that station.
Level crossing removals are necessary for our suburbs, but two years without sufficient replacement car parking at Mentone and Cheltenham is far too long for local commuters.
By comparison to these go-slow projects, previous level crossings removals planned by the Liberal Nationals such as Burke Road, Glen Iris and Springvale Road, Springvale were completed and re-opened inside one year.
Comments attributable to Gordon Rich-Phillips MP:
Mordialloc MP Tim Richardson needs to stand up for locals and demand better parking be provided for Mentone and Cheltenham commuters over the next two years.
Labor must provide sufficient free all day parking for commuters in Mentone and Cheltenham impacted by these very slow construction works.
