Mount Waverley’s liveability at risk due to massive population surge under Labor

Melbourne’s established suburbs in the inner and middle ring will be subjected to a flood of new residents and inappropriate development because of the Andrews Labor Government’s decision to force 70 per cent of the city’s population growth into these areas.

In Question Time at Parliament today the Treasurer, Tim Pallas, boasted that existing Melbourne suburbs would be required to accept a disproportionate share of population growth under Labor’s new policy.

Under questioning by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Pallas could not explain how the amenity, liveability, and neighbourhood character of these areas would cope with this massive population influx.

Victoria’s population is growing by nearly 150 000 people every year and, with Labor having no plans for decentralisation, most of this new population growth is being directed to Melbourne’s established suburbs.

Electorates like Mount Waverley are already absorbing more than their fair share of population growth.

This growth is already putting enormous pressure on public transport services, traffic congestion, as well as local schools and hospitals.

The City of Monash in just the past 4 years has already grown by nearly 12 000 people, a growth rate of 6.4 per cent.

Under Daniel Andrews and Labor this growth is expected to skyrocket, inundating the suburbs of Mount Waverley and Glen Waverley with medium density and high-rise development.

“Melbourne is already under pressure from the population squeeze and under the Andrews Labor Government’s plan to jam more people into electorates like Mount Waverley; it’s going to get much worse.

Labor, which has been in power for 16 of the last 20 years, does not have a plan to appropriately manage our population growth without damaging the liveability, heritage, and neighbourhood character of Melbourne’s suburbs.”
