Nearly 3,000 prisoners miss court appearances in just 3 years under Daniel Andrews

Justice delayed is justice denied and under Daniel Andrews, record numbers of prisoners are failing to be presented to court in contravention of a court order.

These failures are forcing courts to reschedule hearings, delaying outcomes for both victims and those accused of committing a crime while contributing to the growing remand prisoner numbers.

According to media reports 2,777 prisoners failed to appear for their court appearances between July 2016 and June 2019, costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Comments attributable to Shadow Attorney-General, Edward O’Donohue:

“Not only is Daniel Andrews’ incompetence hurting victims of crime, but it is also costing Victorian taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra costs.

Under Daniel Andrews the justice system is grinding to a halt, delaying justice for victims of crime and clogging our already overburdened courts.

Daniel Andrews’ incompetence has led to an increase in the number of prisoners on remand as it is taking longer and longer to have their charges heard and resolved.”
