Reports today of an indigenous prisoner having food deliberately withheld at Ravenhall Prison is the latest concerning incident of many to occur in corrections under Daniel Andrews.
The alleged mistreatment is reported to have occurred over a prolonged period when the prisoner, who was regarded as vulnerable, was being kept in an observation cell.
This incident follows the death early this month of indigenous woman, Veronica Marie Nelson Walker, in Dame Phyllis Frost Prison, who was found dead in her cell only hours after being medically cleared to enter the mainstream prison.
Under Daniel Andrews, Victoria is operating the most expensive correctional system of any state in the nation – yet serious incidents of mistreatment, violence and inmate fatalities continue to occur.
Victorians deserve transparency in our prisons, not another internal investigation and buried reports. Daniel Andrews must come clean and provide answers to the community into these serious incidents.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Corrections, David Southwick:
“The community deserves answers into these incidents and to know just what is going on behind our prison walls.
“Under Daniel Andrews, Victoria is running the nation’s most expensive yet underperforming and chaotic correctional system.”
