Public housing waiting list blowouts

The housing needs of the most vulnerable Victorians continue to be ignored by Daniel Andrews and Labor.

Data released by the Department of Health and Human Services reveals that there has been another significant increase in the number of Victorians on the priority access public housing waiting list.

There are now 20,624 applicants on the priority access waiting list, up 20% in the past year and up 111% in the last 3 years.

The Productivity Commission recently found that Victorian State Government spending on social housing has fallen each and every year of the Andrews Labor Government. Spending is now more than $40 million per year less than the final year of the former Liberal Nationals Government.

Furthermore, in 2017-18, Victoria spent less than half on social housing as New South Wales, and less than Queensland and Western Australia, despite both of those states having smaller populations. Indeed, Victoria spends the least of any government on social housing per person in population.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Housing, Tim Smith:

“Vulnerable Victorians in urgent need of housing continue to be ignored by the Andrews Labor Government as waiting lists skyrocket.

It is shameful that in just 3 years this Labor Government has sat idle as the number of Victorians on the priority access list has increased by over 100%.”
