Right road, wrong design

The Liberal Nationals support a North East Link but Labor’s flawed design will unnecessarily destroy local parkland, recreational facilities, homes and schools as well as costing small businesses and jobs.

Labor’s continued bungling of the North East Link means that Victorians cannot trust the Andrews Government to get this right.

The loss of up to 25,000 trees will decimate the character of local communities.

Labor’s flawed design will destroy parkland at Koonung Creek Reserve and the Borlase Reserve and will see parts of several community sporting facilities and parks acquired during construction, as well as the grounds at Carey Baptist Grammar, Marcellin College and Trinity Grammar.

Important local sporting facilities such as the Bulleen Swim Centre, Boroondara Tennis Centre and the Freeway Public Golf Course will also be lost to the community, affecting thousands of families.

Daniel Andrews used to say he would fight for every single Victorian job. But this flawed design will see the loss of at least 1,000 local jobs, including the almost complete destruction of businesses at the Bulleen Industrial Precinct.

Labor’s dismal track record on major projects speaks for itself – the Myki disaster, its dud desalination plant and the $3.3 billion cost blowout on important level crossing removals.

Daniel Andrews initially promised the North East Link would cost $5 billion, but it has already blown out to $15.8 billion; a cost overrun of more than $10 billion. Building the North East Link without the East West Link will simply dump an extra 100,000 cars on to the car park that is the Eastern Freeway.

It’s more evidence that Daniel Andrews and Labor can’t be trusted. Don’t listen to what they say, look at what they do.

People in the north east will pay a very heavy price for Labor’s flawed design of the North East Link.
