St Kilda: Crime up, police numbers down and locals left to fend for themselves

Reports today of a local petition calling for greater security measures in St Kilda highlights a number of concerning community safety trends within the City of Port Phillip under Daniel Andrews.

Data from Victoria’s independent Crime Statistics Agency highlights serious offences in St Kilda continue to increase.

Since the Andrews Labor Government came to office:

· Crimes Against the Person are up 15.62 per cent

· Common Assault is up 23.81 per cent

· Drug Possession is up 12.16 per cent

· Firearms Offences are up 83.33 per cent and

· Resist or Hinder Officer is up 73.91 per cent

These ongoing increases in serious offences come as Victoria Police’s latest employee by location data shows a decrease in police officers in the Port Phillip Police Service Area and the Southern Metro Regions Highway Patrol units.

Under Daniel Andrews, serious crimes continue to rise in St Kilda, police numbers are going backwards and local residents, traders and visitors are being left to fend for themselves.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police & Community Safety, David Southwick:

“It’s clear the Andrews Labor Government has failed when local residents are turning to their council for help keeping the community safe.

“Daniel Andrews needs to step-up, stop passing the buck and take responsibility for the safety of St Kilda residents, traders and visitors.”
