The true cost of chaos in Daniel Andrews’ broken youth justice system

Today’s release of the Report on Government Services (RoGS) 2020 has revealed the shocking increasing costs of the Andrews Labor Government’s broken youth justice system.

In the last 12 months, 44.3 per cent of young people who go through the youth justice system return to sentenced supervision, up from 39.3 per cent since Labor came into government.

Victoria’s alarming reoffending rate has now surpassed NSW at 36.9 per cent.

With this increase in youth offenders returning to the system, the cost is hitting the pockets of taxpayers with a 98.1 per cent budget blow out since the Andrews Labor Government was elected.

The report reveals the cost of a young person in youth detention has risen by 23.98 per cent to $1748.42 per day in the past year and a staggering 50 per cent since June 2015.

More alarming is that despite the dramatic increase in expenditure, the youth justice system is only decaying with the RoGS detailing between 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 injuries due to a serious assault or assault that has risen from 30 to a staggering 110.

Reports of the Andrews Labor Government hiring agency staff to cover the rise in staff assaults and resignations have been confirmed with a 17.7 per cent increase in additional staff expenditure.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Youth Justice, Brad Battin:

“The report released today has revealed the staggering cost of Daniel Andrews’ neglect of the youth justice system.

“It’s alarming that despite the Andrews Labor Government's enormous 98.1 per cent budget blow out, assaults in youth detention are rising, and the chaos in the youth detention system is getting worse.

“Daniel Andrews needs to stop throwing money at a broken system and instead change the system to ensure the safety of staff and bring control back to our youth justice system."
