Three days in, three strikes for Daniel Andrews’ hotel quarantine program

Confirmation today that one of the two “hot” hotels used to quarantine COVID positive returned travellers has been taken offline for a further week due to ventilation issues is the third failure of Daniel Andrews’ relaunched hotel quarantine program.

Despite government assurances of the comprehensive selection processes of hotels being used in the hotel quarantine program, including considerations for airflow and ventilation, the Holiday Inn Melbourne on Flinders will remain closed for an additional week due to ongoing ventilation issues.

The ongoing closure of this hot hotel follows the Andrews Government scrambling last-minute legislation to enable the charging of fees to returned travellers and a backflip on role and number of ADF personnel to be used in the program.

With up to 160 returned travellers arriving every day, the ongoing closure of one of the two “hot” hotels will place additional pressures on the quarantine system and raises serious questions as to why this hotel was selected in the first place.

With five months to prepare, it is beyond belief that off the back of the worst public policy failure in Victoria’s history, Labor still has not learnt its lessons and for the third time has shown it is unprepared to manage Victoria’s hotel quarantine program.

The failures by the Andrews Labor Government’s first botched hotel quarantine program led to Victoria’s second wave of coronavirus with 801 deaths, more than 20,000 infections, more than 200,000 jobs lost and millions of Victorians facing some of the harshest lockdowns in the world.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police and Community Safety, David Southwick:

“Five months to get hotel quarantine right yet three days in, it’s three strikes up for Labor’s hotel quarantine program.

“With ADF backflips and delays, rushed legislation to enable quarantine fees to be charged and now a hot hotel offline due to poor ventilation, Labor’s relaunched hotel quarantine program is becoming farcical.

“On the back of the worst public policy failure in our history, Victorians are rapidly losing confidence in Daniel Andrews’ hotel quarantine reset and it appears he has learnt nothing from his mistakes.”
