Tim Pallas fails Victoria’s most vulnerable people

The functions undertaken by State Trustees are vital for delivering fair and just outcomes for their clients. The Ombudsman’s Report released today demonstrates that in too many instances, State Trustees has failed its most vulnerable clients.

All Victorians expect the State should look after the financial affairs of our most vulnerable with compassion and prudence.

The Government must ensure State Trustees is adequately funded to deliver on its core mission of protecting vulnerable Victorians.

It is clear that Tim Pallas, as the sole shareholder in State Trustees, has failed to ensure the organisation has delivered the outcomes required by Victorians. Complaints to the Ombudsman have grown by approximately 100 per cent while Tim Pallas has had responsibility for State Trustees.

In my role as a local MP, I am also well aware that State Trustees is not living up to the expectations the Parliament expects from the agency tasked with looking after the financial affairs of many of Victoria’s most vulnerable people. State Trustees is often very slow to respond to constituent enquiries and mistakenly cites client confidentiality even when expressly provided with permission from the client.

The Liberal Nationals call on the Treasurer to do much more than announce yet another Labor Government internal review into the structure of State Trustees. We call on the Government to refer the recommendations of the Ombudsman’s Report to the Legal and Social Issues Committee of the Legislative Assembly for proper and transparent review.

Louise Staley MP

Shadow Treasurer
