To build or not to build – that’s the $4 billion question

At the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) hearing this morning, Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings did not rule out the building of an East West road connection in the future.

Minister Jennings admitted that his agency, Infrastructure Victoria, has recommended that detailed planning for a connection between the Eastern Freeway and CityLink should be underway in the next five years.

There is still $4 billion committed from the Federal Liberal Nationals Government to build the East West Link.

Despite Daniel Andrews pledging he would “take the politics out of infrastructure” he has ignored the advice of Infrastructure Victoria to plan for and build the East West Link.

Victorians were shocked when Daniel Andrews tore up the former government’s East West Link contract, at a cost to the taxpayer of $1.3 billion.

It was also revealed today that despite spending $300 million on the Suburban Rail Loop, Infrastructure Victoria was sidelined from the project and there still has not been a cost benefit analysis completed for the project.

Comments attributable to Shadow Special Minister of State, Kim Wells:

“Daniel Andrews promised to take the politics out of infrastructure, yet Victorian taxpayers have now spent $10 million a year on infrastructure advice that Labor has ignored.

Daniel Andrews continues to ignore the infrastructure experts, and has refused to accept the $4 billion from the Federal Liberal Nationals Government to build the East West Link. As a result Victorian commuters are stuck in traffic.”
