Upper House demands secret environmental documents on contaminated West Gate Tunnel soil

The Andrews Labor Government has for more than six months obfuscated and delayed releasing critical environmental documents, under Freedom of Information laws, relating to the classification, handling and storage of contaminated West Gate Tunnel soil documents.

The Victorian Upper House today determined there should be free access to these documents by affected communities and the general public, and demanded these be provided.

Comments attributable to the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, David Davis:

“The public has every right to know what impact this contaminated soil might have on them, their families and communities.

“They have a right to know now, before millions of tonnes are transported through their suburbs or dumped close to their homes, schools or community facilities.

“Daniel Andrews’ efforts to deny this critical information to the Victorian community is shameful, but today, the Upper House has taken firm action.

“If Labor has nothing to hide in these toxic soil documents, it should have nothing to fear with their release.”
