News today that more than 3,000 Police are attacked each year in increasingly violent, gang-style attacks highlights the need for greater respect and support for Victoria Police.
These attacks are occurring on Police who are going about their job and keeping the community safe, such as the recent St Kilda bashing of two Police officers who were responding to a call for help to assist a vulnerable person who had been assaulted.
Additionally, Police are not being properly supported by the courts with the perpetrators of this horrendous attack bailed within days of the incident despite facing a mandatory minimum 6 month jail sentence.
Respect starts at the top and when Deputy Premier James Merlino describes PSO’s as “plastic police” Victorians should rightly question how serious the Andrews Labor Government are in supporting our frontline officers.
With more than eight Police assaulted each and every day, ensuring the return of respect for all members of Victoria Police must be Daniel Andrews’ number one priority.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police, David Southwick:
“Members of Victoria Police place themselves in harm’s way each and every day to keep Victorians safe – they deserve the communities respect and support.
Police assaults are spiking under Labor but all we are seeing from Daniel Andrews is more of the same.”
